The Ninth Circle (Dante's Inferno) is the lowest and the worst circle of hell in Dante Alighieri's famous poem "The Divine Comedy." It is reserved for the most treacherous and deceitful individuals such as traitors, betrayers, and those who have committed acts of violence against their loved ones. The circle is divided into four sections, each with its own punishment. In the first section, the souls of those who betrayed their country or their party are frozen in a lake of ice up to their necks. In the second section, the souls of those who betrayed their kin or their guests are frozen in ice up to their chin. In the third section, the souls of those who betrayed their benefactors or friends are completely submerged in ice. In the fourth and final section, the soul of the ultimate traitor, Satan, is frozen in ice and can be seen from the central part of the other three sections.
